Planning for the rest of 2010 and Beyond
We have a very busy year ahead of us with a great deal of opportunity for immediate gratification as well as the chance to invest in a greatly expanded SLO County trail system. In 2010-11, in addition to doing our usual array of maintenance, CCCMB plans to provide three new riding opportunities:
- Montaña de Oro - Complete the reroutes (which have already been roughed-in) on the back side of Hazard Peak and on the north end of East Boundary. These will add nearly 2 miles of trail to the system.
Update: After working on these all winter, including the traditional Super Bowl Sunday work day and a great turnout in March, these reroutes are open!
- Froom Ranch - Build a new trail connecting King Trail in Irish Hills with Froom Ranch and open some existing ranch roads to hikers and cyclists. Update: Had a massive TrailWerks event back in November with over 150 volunteers, and these trails were opened in Spring after a season of good rain.
- FASTA project - Begin layout and construction of a skills area in the Eucs at the bottom of Shooters and Morning Glory.
Update: Basic trail lines are flagged & mapped, currently clearing rough corridors for top two trails, with tree removal (as necessary) & trail construction anticipated for late Fall 2011.

| In addition, CCCMB’s trail designers will be working on many long-term trail projects, and we’d love all the help we can get. These projects will lead to new trails in the next 1 to 5 (or 10) years. - Lopez Lake - Completing the extension of Duna Vista Trail and possibly some rerouting of High Ridge Trail to make it more ridable and enjoyable. Update: The Duna Vista Trail extension will be completed around September 2011, and is significantly ahead of schedule thanks to the hard work of Bill Jenkins, Bob Nanninga, and Jim Atkinson.
- Montaña de Oro - Rerouting 4 miles of Oats Peak Trail. This is a huge and complicated project which will take several years to come about. There are no guarantees, but it is our hope that we will be able to convince State Parks and other user groups to open the trail to mountain bikes when it is completed. Update: New trails and reroutes have all been flagged and State Parks is currently submitting their (our) request for a Coastal Development Permit. Once the permit is granted, we hope to begin construction during our 2011-12 work season.
- Avila Beach-Montaña de Oro Connector - This is another huge and complicated project. Update: This project is currently (6/2011) caught in the State's budget battles, and hinges on the proposed purchase of the 2400 acre Wild Cherry Canyon property adjacent to MdO. - Santa Margarita Lake - SLO County Parks and Recreation would like to create a trail around the lake. Finding a route, working cooperatively with private property owners, funding and building the trail are likely to take many, many years. But, once completed, it would be a truly epic ride.
Not really an Update: No concrete progress has been made for bureaucratic reasons.
